Feeling anxious about your upcoming distal wedge in Michigan? You’re not alone. Whether you’re dealing with excess gum tissue around your back molars or preparing for more precise periodontal care, the distal wedge is one of the simplest treatments among gum surgeries. However, it remains an important procedure that requires meticulous planning.
And if you’re not very fond of dental treatments as it is, the idea of oral surgery can be terrifying. Luckily, by understanding what to expect before, during, and after your distal wedge treatment, you can approach your procedure with confidence rather than fear.
A distal wedge procedure is a minor oral surgery used to remove excess gum tissue behind the last molars—often near wisdom tooth areas. This helps reduce areas covered by gum tissue, making oral hygiene not only simpler but simply possible, in some cases. It also reduces pocket depths, improves gum health, and creates easier access for future dental work.
Your periodontist or oral surgeon may recommend it if deep gum pockets are trapping bacteria or if you’re prepping for restorative or orthodontic treatment.
The process will begin with a thorough consultation with your specialist, which includes a clinical examination, X-rays, and a discussion of your options. This is an excellent time to ask questions and express any concerns you have regarding the procedure.
Remember: we’re here to ensure your confidence and comfort every step of the way.
Before treatment day, you may be asked to:
This helps ensure the best environment possible in your mouth before the procedure while keeping sedation side effects (such as nausea or headaches) at a minimum.
Since sedation or local anesthesia may be used, it’s best to have a friend or family member drive you home.
Have soft foods, ice packs, and over-the-counter pain relief ready for you after surgery. Trust us: you won’t want to go to the store with your swelling cheeks.
Bonus tip: Elevate your pillow for the first couple of nights to reduce swelling!
The majority of distal wedge procedures are performed under local anesthesia and last between 30 and 60 minutes. The surgeon gently removes a wedge of gum tissue behind your last molar, reshapes the area, and stitches it to heal.
You’ll remain comfortable throughout, and our patients often report little to no discomfort during the procedure itself.
Healing usually takes 7 to 10 days. Mild swelling, tenderness, or minor bleeding may occur within the first 24 to 48 hours. You will be given post-operative instructions for brushing, rinsing, and eating. We will also be available by phone if you have any concerns.
Feeling anxious before a dental appointment is normal: in fact, approximately 50 to 80% of adults in the United States experience some degree of dental anxiety.
We understand that, which is why at Bloink Dental, we prioritize your comfort. Our practice blends expert surgical technique with a comfort-first philosophy and ongoing support, so you feel calm and cared for—before, during, and after your procedure.
